This week the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approves a new prescription drug to treat erectile dysfunction, Pfizer’s top-selling brand.
The drug, known generically as sildenafil citrate, is to be approved by the FDA.
The Food and Drug Administration, in an advisory panel that will vote on the drug this week, is asking the agency to approve a generic version for erectile dysfunction.
“This drug is not new to the market, but the Food and Drug Administration is advising all stakeholders that this drug may not be a safe and effective treatment for ED and that the FDA will consider approving the drug under the supervision of the drug’s manufacturer,” said FDA chairwoman, Janet Woodcock, in a statement from the panel.
“This approval gives the FDA a new tool to regulate the use of sildenafil in men, which has recently been shown to improve erectile function in a large group of men, and is expected to be available in the near future,” Woodcock added.
“This approval is the first to address the need to better inform men of the use of sildenafil in the first place,” she said.
Sildenafil is a selective inhibitor of a protein found in the erectile tissue of the penis. This protein is responsible for the erection process and is also a key factor for the blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal. When the erectile tissue relaxes, a small amount of blood is released into the penis, which causes the muscles in the penis to contract, resulting in the erection.
The drug is currently approved for use in people with ED. This would make sildenafil the most widely prescribed drug in the U. S. and would not be considered a controlled substance under the law, as it does not have a medical or scientific basis for treating ED.
